A reflection from the porch where I once imagined a different future.
There are moments in life that don’t seem important while you’re living them.
Then one day, you look back and realize they quietly changed everything.
For me, it was a sunset.
When I moved to Ohio, I wasn’t chasing a new life. I came because my family needed me. My dad was carrying the weight of caring for my mom as she was living with dementia, and I wanted to help. Leaving Washington wasn’t easy. My children were still there, and my heart constantly felt like it was living in two places at once.
I didn’t know what the future would look like.
I just knew I had to trust God one step at a time.
Almost every evening after work, I’d find myself driving to my dad’s lake house.
I’d sit on the porch, watching the sun slowly disappear into Lake Erie. There was something about that place that quieted the questions I couldn’t answer.
As I looked around, I’d imagine what the house could become. I’d mentally remodel every room, picture myself drinking coffee on the deck, and dream about turning it into a place where family and friends could gather, where strangers could become guests, and where every sunset would remind people to slow down and breathe.
At the time, it was simply my imagination.
I had no idea that one day I’d be helping bring that vision to life.
Looking back now, I don’t think God was showing me a house.
I think He was giving me hope.
I returned to that same spot over and over again.
Not because anything around me had changed…
But because something inside me had.
Life didn’t suddenly become easy.
There were still hard days.
Days filled with uncertainty.
Days when I questioned my decisions.
Days when I missed my children so much it physically hurt.
Days when I wondered if I had made the right choice.
But every sunset reminded me that endings aren’t always endings.
Sometimes they’re invitations to trust.
Three years later…
I’m sitting on the porch of that same lake house.
Watching the same sunset.
Only this time, I’m no longer imagining what it could become.
I’m helping bring that vision to life.
Every room I once redesigned in my imagination is now part of a real project. A place where family gathers, friends laugh, strangers become guests, and new memories are waiting to be made.
Looking back, I smile because I realize God wasn’t preparing me to own a house.
He was preparing me to help build something bigger than myself.
I whispered,
Thank You, God.
Not because I earned this.
But because His grace never stopped working, even when I couldn’t see it.
People always say, fake it till you make it.
I’ve never really connected with that phrase.
I wasn’t pretending.
I was hoping.
I was praying.
I was choosing to believe that even when I couldn’t see the path ahead, God could.
Today, I realize faith isn’t pretending everything will work out.
Faith is trusting that God is still writing your story, even when you’re standing in the middle of a chapter that doesn’t make sense yet.
Three years ago, I watched this sunset and imagined a different future.
Today, I’m watching the same sunset with a grateful heart because I get to live inside the prayer I once whispered to the horizon.
If you’re in a season where all you can see is water stretching endlessly in front of you, don’t give up.
Sometimes God lets us see the view before He reveals the path.
Maybe He’s doing the same for you.
